What Is Kefir And Where It Came From


Kefir has been around for many centuries. It is said that it came from the shepherds of the Caucasus mountains. The people from this region made kefir by adding kefir grains to goat’s milk and letting it ferment inside a goatskin leather bag. A few days later, the result was a refreshing milk beverage with a slightly creamy texture known as kefir. This kefir is also known for many health benefits and which is why it is sometimes called the "Miracle Food."

There is a legend that the Prophet Mohammed gave the people of the Caucasian Mountain the very first kefir grains and taught them how to make kefir.

Kefir's popularity grew fast and other nations came to obtain it as well. Now, countries from the US, to the former USSR states, to Tibet, Sweden, Thailand, Polland among many others are manufacturers of this tremendously healthy kefir. Even Marco Polo mentioned of it during one of his voyages.

Even though we will never know exactly where kefir grains came from, it will always be known that it's health benefits are not a mystery to anyone.
